Choosing your child’s doctor isn’t an easy job, especially if you consider the fact that this person is someone that you and your child will go to for health concerns for a long time. A lot of doctors have specializations in certain diseases and conditions, and there are those that focus on children’s health. We all know that it takes special skills to be able to handle children and address their needs.

Just how do you know if a doctor is the best fit to be your child’s doctor?

Choosing Your Child’s Doctor: The Questions to Ask

Here are the questions to ask before choosing your child’s doctor?

  • Are they familiar with your child’s special conditions?

If your child has special requirements, such as a condition you have to manage or a disease in the family that needs special attention, it’s important to find a child doctor that specializes in your child’s condition first. This ensures that your child is given the best care possible.

  • Have they handled children with a similar condition?

If possible, choose a doctor that has handled cases similar to your child’s. You may also ask what interventions they usually give. Knowing that your child’s doctor is an expert in a particular field will reassure you that your child is in good hands.

  • What medical school did they go to, and where were they trained?

This might seem to be an unimportant question, being familiar with the medical education background of your child’s future doctor will help you in your decision making. Different medical schools and training institutions have different specialties also. It is a big plus if your child’s doctor came from a reputable school and received excellent training.

  • How many years have they been practicing medicine?

Another important question to consider asking is how long they have been in medical practice. A doctor who has been in practice for a long time is usually skilled and experienced enough in their filed. On the other hand, a new doctor may be more updated with the latest practices and developments in the medical field. So, take these into consideration as well.

  • What aspects of child care do they specialize in?

Pediatrics is already a specialization, but there are further sub specializations. It’s important to determine which aspects of childcare your child’s potential doctor handles. For instance, can they handle surgeries as well? Do they specialize in cardiovascular health or respiratory health? Do they have expert knowledge of infectious diseases and immunology? Getting a doctor with one or more subspecialties is advantageous as your child will be given targeted care and you save on professional fees as well because you don’t have to pay for multiple doctors for different concerns.

  • Will they be able to recommend you to particular specialists for your child’s health?

Building upon the above, it’s safe to assume that not all aspects of your child’s health can be covered by your child doctor. As such, it’s important to be aware of how well connected they are to other doctors in their profession like when you need a dentist for your child. With such, they may know whom to recommend for your kids’ dental needs. Are most of their contacts within the hospital they’re currently working in, or do they have partners from other institutions? This allows you to have peace of mind that your future child doctor will be able to help you find adequate care for your child’s needs.

  • Where is their clinic located, and what hospital are they affiliated with?

It is best that you choose a doctor that is near you so you don’t have to travel far in case of immediate concerns. It also helps to know which hospital they’re affiliated with in case you choose a private doctor, so you know where to go should a health concern arise beyond clinic hours. For example, if you live in Townsville, a doctor that works in a medical center in Townsville is your best option.
